My word, what a time it is to be a gamer, we are being spoilt for choice in new games right now. The major titles normally get released around this time of the year, everyone is used to that by now, but this year it is something else as the number of major titles being released seems to keep growing and growing. There really is a mad crush of games all being released together right now, and judging by some of the sales figures we are seeing, people are happy enough to buy the games they want despite the current economic climate.
I want to give you a run down of just some of the titles that have been released, or are about to be released, since the Eurogamer Expo at the tail end of September. This isn’t a definitive list mind, just some of the titles that spring to mind.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Football Manager 2012
Minecraft (yes version 1.0 is now out)
Football Manager 2012
Batman: Arkham City
Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
Super Mario Kart 7
Super Mario 3D Land
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Pro Evolution Soccer 2012
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Need for Speed: The Run
Saints Row: The Third
I know that I have missed some, so please feel free to shout out in the comments what I have left off the list. That is a list of just 23 titles, if we take them all at having a nice average selling price of £35 that is a total cost of £805. Of course, that number will change depending on platform of purchase and purchasing location, but that is a massive amount of major titles and a lot of money to be spent if you were to buy them all.
Part of me wishes that there was a greater willingness for publishers to release more AAA titles in the normally quiet Summer rather than crushing them all into the pre-Christmas rush. Of course, that is never going to happen, so we are left with a long list of games that are worth playing, or at least giving more than just a passing glance at.
At the end of the day though, we should be thankful that our industry is able to create such a range of titles, I think that this year we have seen one of the biggest seasons for big game releases for quite some time. While we may not be able to play them all straight away, I look forward to a repeat of this next year.
