Analysing the IGF: Dyson

Analysing the IGF: Dyson

This is the fourth in a series of analysis I’m doing on the IGF Finalists. Dyson has been around for a while, but it’s still very good, if very, very hard. I’m going to start this article with a disclaimer: I’m pretty pap at strategy games. The only ones I’ve ever been any good at were things like Company of Heroes, and even then I only work well when I’ve got two friends covering my sides. The problem with me…

The Latest on Overgrowth

The Latest on Overgrowth

The guys from Wolfire have just updated me with the latest developments on their new game; Overgrowth. As you can see in these pictures (more here) the new modular building system is leading to some fantastic creations. Lead artist Aubrey Serr has been showing off the versatility of the system which allows these buildings to appear in game using a small number of parts. In addition to these new screens, the team have been involved in the latest Developer Banter…

Analysing the IGF: Between

Analysing the IGF: Between

Between is a game from Jason Rohrer, the maker of Passage and Gravitation, and it’s by far his most… baffling. It’s multiplayer only, requiring two people to play, and it relies on them having little to no direct contact with one another. Perhaps using the man’s own words to describe the game would be a good place to start.

Review – Incognito: Episode 1

Review – Incognito: Episode 1

Thanks to Spore, any game that promises multi-genre gameplay has begun to look a little suspicious to me. The idea of creating your own species and ushering them through the evolutionary process via all my favourite type of genres appealed to me greatly, until I played it and found it to be shallow and boring. Enter Incognito, an indie episodic game that promised me all the gameplay that Spore didn’t have. The question is, however, whether they succeeded in this.

And the Nominees Are….. (IGF)

And the Nominees Are….. (IGF)

The nominees for the 2009 IGF awards have been announced here. I’m going to be going through the available ones in the next few days, so expect some impressions and linkage soon. As it stands, there are a few recognisable entries in there, such as Zeno Clash (of which we have an interview with here), The Graveyard, and, of course, You Have to Burn the Rope. There are a few non-PC titles this year aswel, but we don’t concern ourselves…

DarkRun

DarkRun

I’ve had another gander over at TIGSource and found this little gem. It’s called DarkRun and it joins the slew of music based games that seem to be slipping out of the Indie factory, all pristine, retro, chic. Like friend-of-site Roburky’s Reset, there is a singular track to play through, and both the enemies and your goals are based on the peaks and troughs of the beat and the melody.

Off and On Again

Off and On Again

A privileged elite thrust from a dying world, an exiled criminal making his escape with a bounty of fuel and fireworks, or over-reliance on GPS leading to a Sunday drive gone terribly awry. Form your own story – you’re in space and there’s gonna be ‘splosions before the end. This is Reset by chatroom regular and talented person RoBurky, and these are the words he has to say about his creation: “‘Rest to Reset‘ by Trash80 (creator of the soundtrack…

Cliff Harris Interview

Cliff Harris Interview

Cliff Harris, more commonly known as Cliffski or Cliff is the person behind one man indie game studio Positech famous for such games as Kudos 2 and Democracy 2 amongst many others. I recently got the chance to quizz Cliff on his games, life as an indie game developer. We also talked about that ever controversial issue of Piracy and DRM. Hit the jump to read the interview.

Cliffski on Game Sales

Cliffski on Game Sales

Positech founder and indy game developer Cliffski has recently been talking about indie game sales and specifically Positech game sales on blog. In something I think came about from this Rock, Paper, Shotgun comments thread Cliffski posted some thoughts about sales volume. This led to a group of people to answer his question about how many copies we thought Democracy 2 and Kudos 2 had sold. Numbers ranging from 1 to 12,258 were shouted out, none of which Cliffski can…
