Far Cry 3 Hands On Report – Part One

Far Cry 3 Hands On Report – Part One

During the Eurogamer Expo I was able to check out the Far Cry 3 demo a couple of times, the demo was PC based and looked amazing. This is the first part of my hands on report.

When I played a little bit of Far Cry 3 during my first day at the Expo I came away with mixed feelings, it seemed to have a lot of potential with the open world and RPG style elements, but that it wasn’t harnessing what it could do properly. That however was a by-product of a limited play test. On the last day of the Expo I had an extended 40 minute session with the game and fell in love with the open world environment. There weren’t any story missions to direct me, just the freedom of the island.

Grid 2 – Hands On

Grid 2 – Hands On

I had no idea what it was going to be like playing a modern racing game with a wheel and pedals until I hit Grid 2 at the Eurogamer Expo. The last time I did was in an ancient beat up SEGA Rally Arcade unit that was gathering dust in my University Students Union. So playing Codemasters’ next big racer with a full wheel and pedal setup was like walking on Mars to me, I didn’t have a clue how things were going to work.

To be honest, it didn’t really work; I spent more time smashing my Ford Mustang into pieces on various trees and rocks than actually driving smoothly on the road in the point-to-point race I was in. This was just one of the demo booths available for Grid 2, the other was a traditional two-lap race with a bunch of AI opponents and an Xbox 360 controller.

FTL – The Verdict

FTL – The Verdict

You can tell a lot about a civilisation from the quality of their starship amenities. Take the Federation for example – holodecks, lounges and gyms are standard on pretty much all of their vessels. The corridors are well lit and spacious, demonstrating a culture that truly cares about their citizens. The Klingons on the other hand – cramped, dark ships without luxuries or non-essentials. You’d be lucky to find even so much as a reclining chair on a Bird of Prey.

FTL’s starships, in comparison, lack dining facilities, sleeping accommodation or even toilets. If that doesn’t tell you something about the life expectancy of your average crew-member, I don’t know what does.

On the First Day Of Deerfeast My Shotgun Brought To Me…

September is well and truly upon us. As retailers across the country will no doubt tell us, this can mean only one thing – Christmas is nearly here. So, in an attempt to fend off the inevitable advance of cheerful music and shiny baubles, today I’ve been reaching for my shotgun and hunting reindeer in the snow.

I’m a sucker for horror. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in no way suggesting I’m brave or manly, but show me a game that takes place somewhere dark with only a weak torch for company and I’ll generally pick it up faster than the time it takes to say ‘oh god oh god oh god I’m gonna die I’m gonna dieeeee!’

F1 2012 Hands On First Impressions

F1 2012 Hands On First Impressions

Being a fan of Formula One and wanting to play a F1 game are two entirely different things. In my opinion the games that I have seen in the past haven’t delivered the excitement and tension I get when watching the races on TV, and don’t convey the same feel of complete precision and total control that the drivers have over their extremely powerful cars. That is until now.

War of the Roses Beta Thoughts

War of the Roses Beta Thoughts

I see much promise in the War of the Roses Beta for this is a game set in a genre and time-period not often explored by games set in the third-person perspective. Set during the 15th Century the game focuses on the war between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. Swords are a plenty, and the multiplayer beta is full of men slashing away like mad fools. Mainly it is me swiping my sword at anything that moves and not doing much apart from getting swiftly chopped to bits.
