Why I Won’t Be Buying Sim City

Why I Won’t Be Buying Sim City

Maxis has always been one of my favourite developers. The Sims, Sim Ant, Sim Farm – All incredibly innovative games, (aside perhaps for their titles,) and each one of them holding a special place in my cruel, twisted heart. However, the announcement that the new Sim City would require an always-on internet connection resulted in me raising my arms and screaming ‘UBISOFT!’ Of course, I then remembered it was actually being published by EA, but my reaction still stands.

Free Indie Game Quick Hits #1

Free Indie Game Quick Hits #1

It’s late on a Thursday evening and everyone is probably looking for some quick games to hit to pass the time until the weekend eventually comes. If you hit the jump, I have two very different, yet both very quirky indie games which are worth a quick blast.

Wii U — First Impressions

Wii U — First Impressions

The first home 8th generation video game console is finally upon us and it’s Nintendo leading the charge with the release of the Wii U. I’ve got a hold of the Premium ZombiU edition, so if you’re stuck on the fence about buying one then hopefully this should help you out. Here are some first impressions:

Gazing into the Fire With Little Inferno

Gazing into the Fire With Little Inferno

There is a game coming out next Sunday on PC and the Wii U (in America of course, we don’t get the console until the end of the month) known as Little Inferno. It is from indie development studio Tomorrow Corporation which is made up of Kyle Gabler, Kyle Gray and Allan Blomquist, and more important, it is a little bit brilliant. This isn’t a Verdict though, we might just save that for the Wii U version. Regardless, I have been playing and really enjoying Little Inferno, a gem of a game.

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs – New Trailer Released

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs – New Trailer Released

In celebration of Halloween festivities, The Chinese Room have released a new trailer for their upcoming horror, Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs. In our Halloween special, Lily summed up everyone’s feelings about the previous entry in the series – “Blood-chilling dread. Mindless, animal terror. Incomprehension and disbelief of the senses, resolving in creeping realisation of the sickening truth.” It’s the kind of game that makes grown men cry, and here at the Reticule we’ve been following developments on its sequel with great interest.

So What Is It? Timber & Stone

So What Is It? Timber & Stone

What do you get when you cross Dwarf Fortress, Age of Empires and Minecraft? Sounding like a rogue-like and strategy gamer’s wet dream, the fascinating new project Timber & Stone has emerged blinking into the sunlight of Kickstarter.

Czech Your Fire!

Czech Your Fire!

Before the inevitable zombie plague swept the planet, ArmA 2 was a place of peace and security. Ok, perhaps that’s not altogether true, but there were definitely less dead people. Less dead people still wandering about, that is. Beyond the mad success of its mod-child, DayZ, the ArmA franchise has long existed as a niche product. Foregoing the CoD approach in favour of long walks followed by even longer periods of being dead, ArmA has always valued realism over accessibility. Now,…

Classy Based Combat

Classy Based Combat

For over a year now, I’ve observed an unsettling trend in class-based shooters. Instead of standing proudly amongst equals, one class has, through no fault of its own become the unwanted cousin. They’ve become the runt of the class-based litter, attracting names like ‘the coward’, ‘the camper’ and ‘the noob.’ Far behind the scuffles on the front line, they watch patiently, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. But despite their devotion to the cause of bringing people to an end, they are…

Far Cry 3 Hands On Report – Part Two

Far Cry 3 Hands On Report – Part Two

In Part One of my Far Cry 3 hands on report I talked a little bit about climbing a radio tower and assaulting a mercenary outpost with the help of a hang glider and jet ski. The second part of my report picks up after I have ensured the outpost is cleared.

The mission from the notice board asked me to eliminate a mercenary leader in a nearby camp with a melee or knife takedown. So far, while I had tried to assault the outpost quietly I ended up having to go in guns blazing; this mission would be my first chance of trying out some of the stealth mechanics.
