As the Sun rises in the East, it brings with it the dawn, the Daw of War. That’s right, Sega and Relic have today announced Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III. Coming seven years after it’s much heralded younger brother, Dawn of War III is the dawn of another event – the first main game in the Dawn of War franchise to be published by Sega. Dawn is coming, but please don’t get it confused with Dorne!
Despite playing the earlier games in the series, and quietly keeping my excitement for Total War: Warhammer under wraps, I’m no expert on the Warhammer and Warhammer 40K lore. I just know that there are combinations of Greenskins, Vampires, Eldar and, of course, Space Marines (don’t forget Chaos too! – Ed) in the different era, and Dawn of War focuses events on the Space Marines conflict with Ork and Eldar.
Executive Producer on the game, Stephen MacDonald had the following to say in the press release:
“This is the Dawn of War that fans have been waiting for. Our biggest units ever? Check. Giant orbital lasers? Check. Base-building, epic heroes, huge battles, it’s all in there. Get ready for the biggest Dawn of War yet. For the Emperor!”
I’m pleased to see base-building get name dropped. Since the glory days of Command and Conquer, it is Relic’s base-building which carries a torch in my RTS loving heart. While Dawn of War II was a great game in its own right, and made brilliant use of the epic heroes that stand tall in the heart of Warhammer, I still missed being able to retreat back to base and regroup.
If awards were given out at the Oscars for Best Videogame Trailer, I think this one that accompanies Relic’s announcement would be a shoe-in:
