Guild Wars 2 Sells Over 2 Million Copies

Guild Wars 2 Sells Over 2 Million Copies

Guild Wars 2 is an immense game, and if I can rip myself away from it for five minutes I might get around to writing some thoughts on it. As it is, I bring word that it has managed to sell over two million copies in just over a fortnight. That is despite ArenaNet temporarily halting first-party sales in order to maintain the in-game experience. The team are also seeing over 400,000 concurrent players on a regular basis, a fantastic feat of server management and player enthusiasm.

This impressive performance must be held up against the struggles being seen by Star Wars: The Old Republic and The Secret World, both of which are currently monthly-sub titles. While we don’t know what Guild Wars will be like a few months down the line, the suits behind the aforementioned titles must be wondering whether they made serious mistakes by sticking with a subscription paying model. I personally this Guild Wars has a lot to offer and will prove to be a huge success in the long-term for ArenaNet.

Dust 514 Beta Impressions

Dust 514 Beta Impressions

I have had the pleasure of taking part in the beta for Dust 514 over the past couple of weeks, the PlayStation 3 shooter which is tied in with the EVE Online universe and which will one day see co-operation between players from both titles. It is a very exciting idea, but one that is clearly going to take a while to come to completion. The beta for Dust is very much that, an early version of the game which is undergoing many changes and updates as it progresses. As such, these are just some early impressions of a still relatively low-level grunt.

The idea behind Dust is brilliant in that whatever happens in Eve impacts on Dust as they share the same universe. I can only assume this means that all the Alliances and Corps found in the PC title will eventually be found in Dust, and that the economies of both will be interlinked with chaos in one game causing chaos in the other. If everything works out, developers CCP could be onto a major winner. Though I do wonder what will happen when the PlayStation 4 eventually gets announced and released, will Dust just transfer over there leaving the PS3 version behind? These are questions for another time though.

Shocking – Guild Wars 2 One Week Away

Shocking – Guild Wars 2 One Week Away

It is fair to say that this has been a very slow summer of games, but things are picking up again, and one game which I have managed to lose track of is Guild Wars 2. The non-subscription MMO is coming out next Tuesday, though if you have pre-ordered from the official site you get access three days early.

I’m not normally a fan of MMOs, the traditional monthly subscription format has put me off and I haven’t delved into any of the new free-to-play titles which are taking over the world. But Guild Wars 2 has me interested, promises of a fast-paced combat system and engrossing storyline have me tempted. However, I baulked at the idea of spending £49.99 for the digital edition and went for the traditional approach of a supermarket pre-order. I might hate it when I get into the game, or I may love it, but I am going to take the plunge to try and conquer my MMO fear.

Game of Thrones MMO Gets ‘Seven Kingdoms’ Title

Game of Thrones MMO Gets ‘Seven Kingdoms’ Title

The singleplayer Game of Thrones RPG wasn’t too well received by Lily, but maybe the free-to-play, MMO will be. The Game of Thrones based MMO has today received its full title, Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms, not really an original name for anyone who knows the books or the TV show. At Comic-Con, July 12-15 a debut trailer will be released for the game which will take place after the deaths of King Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark and will feature PvP, siege combat and formation of alliances. After the disappointing solo game, is anyone still interested in this?

Rift – Seven Months of Premium content

Since its release in March 2011 Trion Worlds hasn’t been shy in bringing out new content for its Rift player base. In just seven months five content patches have been released bringing in new raids, dungeons and various updates and bug fixes to the gameplay features. They have also given bonus items to players who have continued to ‘pay and play‘ gaining percentage increases on experience, personal vendors and vanity items for their characters to wear. But is this all…

Daniel Erickson talks up The Old Republic at Eurogamer Expo

Having already broken EA’s pre-order record long before the December release date there is a lot to expect from a developer that has never produced an MMO before. The release date of Bioware’s first venture into the genre was announced at the Eurogamer Expo last weekend and lead writer of Star Wars: The Old Republic, Daniel Erickson was on hand to talk in a bit more detail about the game.

Rift – Impressions

Rift – Impressions

Let’s open this with some candour. To review an MMO after 23 levels and suggest I have experienced everything the game has to offer would be false, that’s why we’re calling this ‘impressions’.
