Our Week in Games – Week 70

Our Week in Games – Week 70

What’s happened this week in the gaming world? Oh yes, the beta for Titanfall has started, the conjecture on Twitter is that people have been going slightly mad trying to get access. Apparently some people have been buying codes on eBay for ludicrous prices. Valve took the brave step in allowing people to add tags to games which might have resulted in the expected nonsense. Meanwhile Kevin Spacey returned with House of Cards on Netflix which makes me wonder why can’t we get more games with episodic story-telling to equal The Walking Dead episodes?

Enough of that, on with the games.

Our Week in Games – Week 69

Our Week in Games – Week 69

The latest outrage in the games industry lies with the rebirth of a seminal favourite, Dungeon Keeper. EA released a new mobile version of the game this months using the now commonplace free-to-play philosophy. Their free-to-play methods seem to have done down like a paid of concrete boots with gamers, even the BBC picked up on the outrage. I haven’t played this monstrous, evil game yet…but my impression of mobile games like this is that you flick on once or twice during a day and have a quick blast before switching to something else. If you play like that, surely the in-app purchases aren’t such a big deal? But maybe that is just me wanting to play devil’s advocate as usual.

On a less controversial note, why not hit the break to check out our latest version of Our Week in Games.

Our Week in Games – Week 68

It is Super Bowl weekend, and while I was thinking about the upcoming big game last week, I found myself dreaming of making a game. I dreamt bout making an NFL management game, only to have my dream dashed against the rock when Out of the Park Developments announced they were working on their own game. Maybe I’ll take a look when it is out in the distant future, it might be as addicting as Football Manager.

There is another NFL related story to link to before we get on with Our Week in Games. Some enterprising soul has taken Madden NFL and played havoc with the teams contesting the Super Bowl. I’ll embed a video after the break, but I strongly recommend you check out the full article.

Day’s of Z

Day’s of Z

OK so I caved. I gave in to the hype, the stories, the videos and the general ‘feel’ of the experience surrounding it, and I bought into an Alpha: I bought Day-Z. This is also smashing one of my golden rules; never ever, ever, pre-order anything and if you think about it, an alpha purchase is pre-ordering a pre-order. You’re not even buying a complete game…. just a promise of one. What the hell was I thinking?

Czech Your Fire!

Czech Your Fire!

Before the inevitable zombie plague swept the planet, ArmA 2 was a place of peace and security. Ok, perhaps that’s not altogether true, but there were definitely less dead people. Less dead people still wandering about, that is. Beyond the mad success of its mod-child, DayZ, the ArmA franchise has long existed as a niche product. Foregoing the CoD approach in favour of long walks followed by even longer periods of being dead, ArmA has always valued realism over accessibility. Now,…

Arma 3 Won’t Use Steam Workshop – Will Have Better Mod Integration

Arma 3 Won’t Use Steam Workshop – Will Have Better Mod Integration

While the popularity of the DayZ mod for Arma 2 (Nick thoroughly enjoyed it) seems to be increasing at an exponential rate, I regularly see comments from people who are new to the series that they are having difficulties in installing the mod and getting it to work. I wondered whether these difficulties would lead Bohemia to explore the possibilities to using Steam Workshop to support mods for Arma 3. I put my question to Arma 3 creative director Ivan…

Mod Spotlight – DayZ

Mod Spotlight – DayZ

I am running. Running for my life. With two bullets remaining and a pair of zombies hot on my tail, the likelihood of getting out of this one is slim to none. Besides, even if I do manage to score a pair of lucky headshots, I’ll then be out of ammo, out of food and with absolutely no idea where I am or which direction I’m going in. In short, I’m screwed. Welcome to DayZ.
