Rumour Control – PS4 and Xbox 720 Details Emerging

If these two big rumours surrounding the PS4 and Xbox 720 emerged yesterday, I would doubtless have ignored them as April Fool’s. Today is a new day so word about the new toys that will be coming from Sony and Microsoft need to be mentioned. Hit the jump for the details.

First up is word from VG24/7 that Microsoft’s next console will be getting a Christmas 2013 release and will also come with a Blu-ray disc drive. This is in contrast to reports last month that the next Xbox wouldn’t have any disc drive at all. However, that might very well be referencing a slimmed down Xbox as alluded to in this Eurogamer report.

Further, the next Xbox will possibly feature two graphics cards, each equivalent to an AMD 7000 series GPU and four to six cores on the CPU. The VG24/7 report also reveals that the Xbox 720 will require an always on net connection as an anti-piracy feature, and it will have a next generation version of Kinect built it. The full report can be found here.

On the PlayStation front, Patrick Garrett and his team at VG24/7 have been busy again and bring word that the PS4 is being targeted for release before the new Xbox. In addition, it is being rumoured that the new PlayStation will be using the DirectX graphics API rather than a Sony homebrew and it will ditch the Cell CPU architecture in favour of an AMD system. If true, these hardware decisions will likely make development of cross-platform titles for the PS4 much easier due to broadly similar tech base. You can find more details here.
