Mass Effect 3 Hits UK Number 1 Spot – A Sign of Trouble for GAME?

Mass Effect 3 has made an immediate impact on the UK all formats chart hitting the top spot according to Chart-Track, and it has done it in style. The release is the best selling chart topping game so far this year and has even outperformed the sales of the first two games in the series, combined.

This is all in light of GAME and GameStation not stocking the game in any way, with the immediate success of Mass Effect 3 proving that a traditional retail storefront is not essential for big games to sell well. The strong performance echoes EA chief, John Riccitiello’s comments to MCV where he said, without mentioning GAME explicitly “If one goes away, the other guys pick up the slack. I really don’t see it as anything other than a very temporary dislocation.” If Mass Effect 3 can sell so well without GAME, you really have to wonder whether a specialist games retailer is needed on the highstreet.

In related news, GAME have hired Rothschild help find a buyer. GAME Group currently has a share price of 1.55p and was a low as 0.5p earlier today.
