Don’t Starve Getting Multiplayer This Summer

Don’t Starve Getting Multiplayer This Summer

How time flies, it was just over a year ago when I judged Don’t Starve and since then there have been numerous updates including something about giants which sadly I haven’t checked out. Much shame on me. Today though, Klei have surprised the community and the whole world by announcing Don’t Starve Together, a multiplayer expansion for the game that is coming this summer.

Details are sketchy, but I’ve pulled out some of the salient bits from Klei’s announcement:

Don’t Starve Together is a multiplayer expansion for Don’t Starve allowing friends or complete strangers to survive together, in either public or private games. As far as we know, it will have most of (if not all) the normal features in Don’t Starve, balanced for multiplayer, and potentially even add new features.

We believe that Don’t Starve Together will support 2-4 players simultaneously. Could be more, but we are aiming for 4 minimum.

Don’t Starve Together will be a free expansion for all current owners of Steam / Standalone. Thank you for supporting us!

With the addition of multiplayer, the price of Don’t Starve will go up to $19.99 USD around the time Alpha becomes available.

Single player Don’t Starve will not be affected by the addition of multiplayer except for content or features not specifically related to multiplayer gameplay. Balance changes and content aimed at creating an interesting multiplayer experience will not be added to the single player game.

It all sounds terribly exciting, especially considering other (but not necessarily similar) survival games like Terraria and of course Minecraft already have multiplayer. There isn’t any word yet on whether the multiplayer version will make its way to PlayStation where the base game seems to be doing well, but I’m sure time will tell.

Who here is playing Don’t Starve and what do you make of the plans?
