Arma 3 Won’t Use Steam Workshop – Will Have Better Mod Integration

While the popularity of the DayZ mod for Arma 2 (Nick thoroughly enjoyed it) seems to be increasing at an exponential rate, I regularly see comments from people who are new to the series that they are having difficulties in installing the mod and getting it to work. I wondered whether these difficulties would lead Bohemia to explore the possibilities to using Steam Workshop to support mods for Arma 3. I put my question to Arma 3 creative director Ivan Buchta, hit the jump to see what he had to say.

We curently don’t consider using the Steam Workshop. The main reason behind is that we would like to keep Arma 3 infrastructure independent from a particualr distribution network, an also because the technical solution is rather different from what both we and our modding community are accustomed to.

Fear not though as mod integration in Arma 3 is still important to Bohemia, and they are looking at making things work in a simpler manner.

We are exploring the possibilities regarding smoother mod integration. The DayZ popularity has certainly played its role in prioritizing this issue. We regard the modding scene as important as in the previous titles, and we are going to support it by e.g. mission editor as part of game, online documentation and tool suite.

We intend to support DayZ; beta executables already offer some improvements which might be beneficial to DayZ mod functionality.
