Our Week in Games – Week 74

Our Week in Games – Week 74

This past Friday saw the release of Titanfall and Dark Souls II in the UK. I will be taking on Titanfall and delivering a Verdict over the coming weeks, while it seems like we are all waiting for the PC release of Dark Souls II. There seems to have been a fairly even split between those I follow on Twitter between chatter on these two titles, as spring beckons the big guns are landing. Furthermore, GDC takes place this week in San Francisco, I’m expecting fireworks.

While we wait for big news from across the pond, why not check out the latest Our Week in Games.

Disaster stuck this week as my Nexus 7 tablet encountered a problem where I can’t even turn it out without the loading screen looping for ever and eternity. It is only a small problem in the grand scheme of things, but it makes me realise that we haven’t had any major Red Ring of Death scenarios with the new consoles just yet. They’ve been out for a few months now, but they seem to have avoided any mass plague of hardware issues. I think that is something for the games industry to be proud of.

While you ponder the horrors of the Red Ring of Death, why not hit the break and check out the latest Our Week in Games…

I’m struggling with an introduction this week, after Microsoft announced their massive price-cut it seems like the industry has been fairly quiet away from the whole Twitch plays Pokemon Red hooha. I’m sure there are many other wonderful things taking place on Twitch that haven’t been publicised as much, but that surely shows how our gaming medium is expanding into new territory. If you aren’t streaming anything right now, hit the break to find out what we have been playing in the latest Our Week in Games.

Games journalism is moving forward and breaking new ground with prominent figures such as Matt Lees and Cara Ellison use Patreon to crowd-fund support for exploring new avenues. Matt looks to be branching into doing YouTube on his own terms while Cara is travelling and getting into embedded journalism with indies. And then of course we get articles which spend the first half talking about how to breathe. I won’t link to that, save to say I didn’t see the point. The question is, what can we do here at Reticule Towers to give you what you want. Let us know in the comments.

On a less serious note, lets get on with Our Week in Games.

What’s happened this week in the gaming world? Oh yes, the beta for Titanfall has started, the conjecture on Twitter is that people have been going slightly mad trying to get access. Apparently some people have been buying codes on eBay for ludicrous prices. Valve took the brave step in allowing people to add tags to games which might have resulted in the expected nonsense. Meanwhile Kevin Spacey returned with House of Cards on Netflix which makes me wonder why can’t we get more games with episodic story-telling to equal The Walking Dead episodes?

Enough of that, on with the games.

The latest outrage in the games industry lies with the rebirth of a seminal favourite, Dungeon Keeper. EA released a new mobile version of the game this months using the now commonplace free-to-play philosophy. Their free-to-play methods seem to have done down like a paid of concrete boots with gamers, even the BBC picked up on the outrage. I haven’t played this monstrous, evil game yet…but my impression of mobile games like this is that you flick on once or twice during a day and have a quick blast before switching to something else. If you play like that, surely the in-app purchases aren’t such a big deal? But maybe that is just me wanting to play devil’s advocate as usual.

On a less controversial note, why not hit the break to check out our latest version of Our Week in Games.

It is Super Bowl weekend, and while I was thinking about the upcoming big game last week, I found myself dreaming of making a game. I dreamt bout making an NFL management game, only to have my dream dashed against the rock when Out of the Park Developments announced they were working on their own game. Maybe I’ll take a look when it is out in the distant future, it might be as addicting as Football Manager.

There is another NFL related story to link to before we get on with Our Week in Games. Some enterprising soul has taken Madden NFL and played havoc with the teams contesting the Super Bowl. I’ll embed a video after the break, but I strongly recommend you check out the full article.

I get the feeling there was a bit of a ‘Games Journalism Twitter Scandal’ in the past week. They seem to come two-a-penny these days and it is safe to say that me and tech journo Mike Jennings are fed up of them. The most recent event entirely passed me by, but who knows, maybe this one was serious. I doubt it was a match for Dorito-gate from a couple of years ago though.

The big gaming news from the past week was the release of the Shadow of Mordor trailer (see it after the break) which showed plenty of Orc killing and lots of comparisons to Assassin’s Creed and Batman. My take? It looks like a fun romp through the world created by Tolkien. Count me as interested.

I think the big news from the past week was the realisation of just how weak the Wii U has been performing at retail. Nintendo slashed the sales forecast of the machine drastically from 9 million to 2.8 million for this financial year. It is a sad turn of events, but not one that should be all that surprising. Not many people outside of the core gaming base fully understood what the Wii U offered, and the release of superlative titles like Super Mario 3D World seem to have done little to convince people to invest in the machine. In truth, I only purchased mine because I was able to get it for pennies after trading in my massive back catalogue of console games. At full price I was never going to realistically buy it.

Enough doom and gloom from Nintendo, what have we been up to this past week?
