XCOM: Enemy Unknown – The (Tablet) Verdict

XCOM: Enemy Unknown – The (Tablet) Verdict

I normally start a Verdict like this by saying something along the lines of “I’ve never played a game in this series before, but this really surprised me.” Or I might write “I don’t usually play games on my tablet, but my eyes have been opened by this game.”

Today, those phrases can be applied to XCOM: Enemey Unknown, but not the PC or even the console version as I have been busy playing the turn-based alien hunter on my Google Nexus 7 tablet.

UK Music, the IPO and Aardman launch Music Inc.

A group of powerful voices in the British media industry have come together to launch a game on Android on iOS. The game is called Music Inc and comes from UK Music, the IPO and Aardman animations. It puts you in the shoes of a managerial figure of a fictional band which you must try to guide to success through managing their style and PR through to how they release their music.

Heroes of Camelot: The Verdict

Heroes of Camelot: The Verdict

Grind. Any person who’s played an MMO, perhaps barring Guild Wars 2, will be intimately familiar with the concept. Some see it as a necessary mechanic to allow the learning of game mechanics and to give a reason to explore the usually huge open-world environments. Others see it as a way of padding and prolonging the experience. In truth, it depends on the game and in some cases it is entirely necessary, in others it is less so. The common denominator though is that the grind is a means to an end and not the driving force of the experience.

I wish I could say the same about Heroes of Camelot.

Our Week in Games – Week 58

Our Week in Games – Week 58

We are less than a week away from the Eurogamer Expo at Earl’s Court in London, and I will be making the trip down there with the aim of getting some time with the PS4 and Xbox One…though I will probably give up on the queues and just play some indie games. It should be fun at least! Let’s take a look at what has gone down in the past week in Our Week in Games.

Heroes & Generals Enters Open Beta

Heroes & Generals Enters Open Beta

A new free-to-play MMOFPS has entered the arena, this one is known as Heroes & Generals and has a World War Two setting. It promises to allow gamers to play in two distinct fashions, the Hero side of things is first-person combat featuring ground, armoured and air combat along with a strategic layer with the Gnerals. The Generals will apparently determine the strategic direction of the war and manage reinforcements and battlefield assets.

Mobile Gaming – Temple Run 2 and Rayman Jungle Run Mini Verdicts

As I start to delve deeper into the Android store on my tablet, I will be looking to do more mini Verdicts of small lightweight mobile games and full scale Verdicts on the more in-depth titles. After the break you will find two mini Verdicts of free-to-play title Temple Run 2 and Ubisoft’s £1.99 title Rayman Jungle Run.

nVidia’s Project Shield Announced

nVidia’s Project Shield Announced

nVidia have today announced Project SHIELD, a very bizarre looking portable device which will be capable of playing Android titles from the Google Play store and streaming PC games from machines using nVidia’s GeForce GTX 650 series of GPU’s. Intrigued like me? Hit the break for some more details.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 – The Verdict

New Super Mario Bros. 2 – The Verdict

Mario’s back, Peach has been kidnapped, yadda yadda… you know the drill. If you want a one line review of the game, then there you have it. If you want more, then New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a largely soulless retread of a game you’ve already played several times, with the few innovations it does attempt appearing both ironic and superficial at the same time.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is another 2D Mario game and a sequel to the DS and Wii games that all share the ‘New’ moniker. It’s telling that this hasn’t been updated, partially because ‘New New Super Mario Bros.’ would be grammatically awkward but also because all three games are near identical. The set up is the same as always — Bowser and his Koopalings have stole away with Peach, and Mario must pass through several themed worlds, conquering all the platforming challenges in his way to save her.

LEGO Batman 2 – The Verdict

LEGO Batman 2 – The Verdict

It must be noted off the bat that I have been playing the PS Vita version of LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, a bit of much needed context when you consider the rest of this Verdict.

I am gravely disappointed by this version of the game, I have dabbled very briefly with the PC version and I can see that the game on the PC and high-def consoles is quite impressive. But knowing what the Vita is capable of, I am left feeling disappointed by the handheld interpretation.

Wipeout 2048 – The Verdict

Wipeout 2048 – The Verdict

One of the Vita launch titles I was most looking forward to playing was Wipeout 2048, and when I received it as a birthday present last weekend I was over the moon. I slotted the dinky little game card into my Vita and watched the opening video with a smile plastered on face. The video shows the development of racing in the Wipeout canon from the point of view of the Feisar team with cars from the early 20th Century,…
