My Hopes for the Year Ahead

My Hopes for the Year Ahead

It is a new year, and with that, we should all have plenty to look forward to, the FA Cup Third Round, Superbowl and Wrestlemania will all take place in the coming weeks and months. While I am certainly looking forward to those events, I have a few hopes for what I will occur in the gaming world over the next twelve months. Kevin is running through his Top 10 Games to look forward to, so my hopes will largely avoid specific games. Apart from my first choice of course.

Greenlight Watch list – Help Get ‘Black Mesa’ Onto Steam

Black Mesa, for those who are unaware, is a fan made third party mod that aims to overhaul Valve’s original Half Life game. The 40 man development team say they wish to “create a more engrossing in-game world with more varied, complex environments and more challenging, realistic gameplay”. But Black Mesa is not just a mod for Half Life it’s a total recreation of the game using Valve’s very own Source engine, which makes it even more of an accomplishment and even more amazing when you see the final results.

Dishonored – New Screens Galore

Dishonored – New Screens Galore

A host of new screen have been released today showing off Arkane Studios’ Dishonored, a title which I’ve been quietly keeping tabs on since I saw the first concept art emerge last year. The game is set in an industrial whaling city with a mix of high technology and mysticism known as Dunwall. You will play as a supernatural assassin in Dishonored and there is promised to be a very flexible combat system which will allow you to mix stealth, supernatural powers and brute force to achieve your goals.

The world has been created by Half-Life 2 art director Viktor Antonov, and the visual similarities with City 17 are subtle but noticeable. I also get a sense of inspiration from Fable III in some of the screen shots, maybe that is just me though. Hit the jump for all the images, and click on them to see them in all their full size glory.

Valve Shut Up and Take Our Money

Valve Shut Up and Take Our Money

I once entertained the idea that in the grand scheme of geekery, my abstinence from comic books and action figures meant that I still retained some shred of credibility. It inevitably turned out the world merely hadn’t manufactured colourful pieces of paper and plastic on subjects I’d fork over money for. See, games companies have only just realised that we all have more money than sense.
