Are achievements spoiling your enjoyment of games?

There used to be a time when I loved the unique chime that sounded as an achievement popped, a time when I would battle through a game on the hardest settings just to hear it ring out and feel the sense of accomplishment as X amount of gamerscore accumulated into my total. Alas, the novelty of achievements have long since passed me by an now they serve only to annoy and distract me from immersion in a game.

I spent a good portion of the morning battling my way through hordes of unyielding, malevolent beings hell-bent on my destruction. Once I’d got through London though I arrived at BandaiNamcoUK’s office near Hammersmith for a 3 hour hands-on with an almost finished PS3 copy of Dark Souls 2.

I’ve got what I call a love-hate relationship with the first Dark Souls. I love the environment and the feel of the game, though I at times found the game to be far too unforgiving and wilfully obtuse. That said, it still wormed it’s way into my affection so I was quite excited at my chance for some hands-on time with the sequel.

12 Minutes Of Dark Souls 2 Gameplay

IGN have released an exclusive Dark Souls 2 gameplay demo earlier today. Whilst looking very similar to the previous game, it’s apparent that a lot of improvements have been made both visually and gameplay wise.
