Eurogamer Expo Day Two – The Lowdown

Eurogamer Expo Day Two – The Lowdown

I took the executive decision to stay in my hotel room until 11am and therefore skip the inevitable massive queue that would have been present if I had gone early. As such I was able to walk straight in to Day Two of the Expo without getting stuck in the usual massive queue.

Sir, You are Being Hunted: The Preview

Sir, You are Being Hunted: The Preview

I’ve recently been scampering around the hunting grounds in the upcoming PC game; Sir, You are Being Hunted. The game is currently in early-alpha and I’ve had chance to sink a few hours into it to give you lucky people my initial impressions.

Everything about this game is quintessentially English. From the predominantly fen-like rural setting, to the fact that a flask of tea will almost fully heal you. It instantly feels comfortable, like a pair of old slippers. In front of a fire. With a border collie.

Total War: Rome II – First Impressions

Total War: Rome II – First Impressions

With a gentle whisper the embargo for coverage of Total War: Rome II has lifted and I would assume that many sites are going live with their reviews. We here at The Reticule are in no rush to deliver our Verdict’s right away, and thanks to my flat moving and two job shenanigans I’ve only managed to play about 8 hours of the game so far. In a game of this size, that really isn’t enough time to really dig into everything. What I have done though is gather some brief early thoughts together, which you can read after the break.

The Reticule Presents: An Arma-3 Flyby

Bohemia Interactive’s ArmA 3 takes place on the fictional island of Altis, a 270 square kilometer island somewhere in the Mediterranean. Rather than sit down and try and explain to you simply how mind-mindbogglingly huge that is, I thought I’d show you.

The Starmade Alpha – My God, it’s full of Blocks…

The Starmade Alpha – My God, it’s full of Blocks…

Minecraft was fun for a few hours. Eventually though, after the final blocks are placed in my wood and stone villa overlooking the sea, the sad truth of my endeavor starts to sink in – it’s all utterly pointless. At least with Lego you can at least pretend the things you build have function, but in the almost-endless forests of Notch’s masterpiece, it’s a case of build and move on.

Starmade is a little different. It lets you build fully functioning star-ships, stations and planetary complexes, fight pirates and other players, all in an infinite void. And it makes you use the word “blocks” uncomfortably often.

I am making the connection between Starmade and Minecraft early because… well, look at it. It looks like an overly ambitious mod for the latter, and often even feels like it. But where Minecraft sets you free in an essentially unchanging landscape with the tools to settle in and build pretty things, Starmade plops you in an endlessly moving universe with the bare essentials required to build a ship, then throws pirates at you.

The Last of Us – Not a Verdict

The Last of Us – Not a Verdict

The Last of Us may be a good game. Many have declared it the greatest game ever, others have commented on its setting, its superb voice acting and the brutality that drives the plot ever onwards. And, as is becoming a frequent occurrence these days, I have an opinion on it. This is not a review however, I have not finished the game and I quite possibly never will. But I want to at least throw my grain of salt onto the scales of greatness and have my voice counted, even though it’s clearly attempting to swim against the current…

I don’t like it.

Free Indie Game Quick Hits #3

Free Indie Game Quick Hits #3

We often get indie developers sending us links to their free games or press releases, but so often our daily lives get in the way of us looking at them. Tonight though, I have been able to take a quick look at Last Jungle In Sector 17 of which the prototype can be played here. Further down the line I wouldn’t be able to feature this on my Free Indie Game Quick Hits as it is on Greenlight and has a Kickstarter, but the demo is worth a quick play around with as it is.
