[...] Over at the Reticule, Steve Peacock gets frustrated with MMOs, which is something I suspect many of us will have sympathy with. The genre codification has left many of RPS with little urge to devote a hundred hours into a new one. Meanwhile, Greg Wild has a look at Rapture. [...]

It's quite difficult to deny that the FPS taken to its fundamentals basically sates the "man bring fire, smash!" part of humanity :D

Great piece Greg, really reminded me that the world of Rapture was really quite amazing, even if the game somewhat fell apart after...you know what! I had really forgotten how the city felt to walk around, it was awe inspiring at some parts, especially at the start where you come across Ryan's mega-bust. The different areas of the game, Fort Frolic especially, were gorgeous and showed how much attention to detail had gone into the world itself. I too hope that it isn't all ruined with Bioshock 2.

@Haplo: Here's another thing they needed to make the environment sustainable. Sunlight for the plants. Anyone care to prove me wrong about that?

Oh, and then of course there's the fact that the entire thing hasn't flooded after 10 solid years of leaking. Okay, so the since is borked. But it is very pretty and high brow in the thought dpeartment for an FPS... oh, and surely it was propelled to heady new depths? No? Okay. =P

And the fact that an engineer down in Rapture managed to make a security system based on pipe mania is something that really made the game for me. Didn't exactly add the world per se, but it added something.

One of the interesting things I found about Rapture was that it wasn't the environment that made it unsustainable. They obviously had food, water, oxygen, etc. But it seems the real problem was elsewhere, something far more intangible. The old saying 'Man cannot live on bread alone' seems to come to mind.
