With the advent of the Zdoom engine, games like Strife can be played in higher screen resolution, as well as having a command console for cheats, and other game modifiers.
Check it out!

Oh right! It's been that long since I played the two I seem to have gotten them muddled up. Cheers Spacewalk.

Just to correct an error in your article; Hexen was the one with the hubs, not Heretic. Heretic also didn't have player stats, that was Hexen again.

I should finally do a write-up about Azrael's Tear myself. It's one of my favorite games. Anyway, I strongly recommend it. It has a bit of the first Thief's atmosphere (you play a thief from the future competing against others like you in an underground complex), but the gameplay is more adventure game like.

Also, it has dinosaurs + immortal knights of the round table and still manages to be a very serious story.

Can't say I ever actually heard of Azrael's Tear. Probably the hardware barrier.

Could give it a Rose Tinted Retrospective sometime in the future perhaps if I find time :D

A fondly-remembered classic. I used to go round to my mate's house on our day off from work and we'd sit and go through this and/or Realms of the Haunting, nibbles and beers in hand, until our eyes and minds started to bleed.

It is remarkable how well it stands up even now. I think the cartoon story-telling actually helps the aged graphics look less like a decrepit artefact of the period and more of a stylistic choice. Of course, Zdoom helps enormously, too. :)

What about a game like Azrael's Tear which came out in 1995, also had multiple choices and endings, and had a 3D engine looking just about as good as Quake? Of course almost no one had a hardware to run the game on when it was released.

I think I remember playing Heretic (or maybe it was Hexen?) at some distantly related family members' house one Christmas. That seemed fun, but never heard of this one! May try it out sometime, see how it matches up to modern games.

I'd resigned myself to believing my memories of this game were but a figment of my imagination! I remembered it as being based off of the BUILD engine, which probably explains why I didn't stumble across it when I went looking.
