Call Me Duty (Again)

In an impressive bit of backtracking, Activision Blizzard have today revealed that the Call of Duty moniker previously dropped from the upcoming Modern Warfare 2 is to appear on the box after all. Revealed in a Tweet from a member of the Infinty Ward developer team, the box art clearly shows the Call of Duty name – albeit in a smaller font than usual – above the Modern Warfare 2 logo itself.

When questioned by Kotaku, an ActiBlizz spokesperson said “Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,” and that the company has “focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title’s package.”

It remains to be known as to why the name was dropped and then reattached, but it’s probably a safe bet to guess it may have had something to do with the loss of brand awareness according to this report from Gamasutra. Modern Warfare 2 is still set for a November release.

Stompy Robots and Beardy Wizardry Both Free!

I feel like 'pew pew' is far too high in pitch for the size of these lasers. Perhaps 'pow pow' would be better.

Seems like a good day to be a PC gamer. Firstly, to mark the 25th anniversary of Battletech, Smith & Tinker are allowing Mektek.net, a Mechwarrior community site, to give away Mech Warrior 4 and all of its expansions for free, to go with the announcement of a new Mechwarrior game. Blimey, that’s a lot of stompy robots for better than cheap. While they haven’t quite launched it yet, keep an eye on the website for download details. Mechwarrior 4 is known to be perhaps one of the less than classic Mechwarrior titles, I still have fond memories of loading up my MadCat with far too many EMP lasers and heat sinks, and trying to melt everything with hydraulics.

EA Come Clean & Conquer

It appears EA have finally come clean after yesterday’s news about C&C4, announcing it to the world today. Promising class-based action, all new objective based multiplayer mode and persistent player progression, C&C4 is set to see the light of day in 2010. Joe Kucan is confirmed to be returning to his role as Kane, and perhaps most interestingly, the title is being touted as the ‘Final Chapter of the Tiberium Saga’. Here’s the press release:

Kane 4 Ever?

Usually the C&C news would fall to Chris, but as he doesn’t seem to be around right now it falls to me to tell you that Joystiq are reporting on a Twiccup (I’m totally coining that phrase) from the EA UK PR Twitter account. In the mistaken tweet, whomever was responsible accidentally let slip a link to a confirmation of Command And Conquer 4 development being underway at EA LA. Unfortunately the press release is not there yet and the tweet itself has been removed. No other information has yet been forthcoming from EA, but it being called C&C4 points towards the latest title being a return to the Tiberium soaked fields of the GDI Vs Nod conflict. Rest assured Chris will have more as soon as he hears it. (Because passing responsibility is fun.)

Years ago my parents bought what was at the time a new PC, it came with a few freebies, one of the best was Battlezone a game which mixed first-person combat elements with base control and resource management normally found in real-time strategy games.
