MySpace is set to become a destination for online games according to this Games Industry report. The site’s owners, News Corp are keen to make up lost ground on Facebook and Twitter and they think the turning the site into a games portal is the best way to do this.

However their efforts may be in vain, last week I looked at the growing prescence of games companies on Facebook and the big publishers are likely to focus their efforts on Facebook which received more than double the number of unique visitors that MySpace had in April this year.

Details are scarce at the moment, but unless this new MySpace initiative is vastly different to what we are starting to see on Facebook it is unlikely to entice users to switch from the more popular site. Of course it may be possible to get new users to visit a games oriented MySpace, but most will already have a group of favourite game portals.

What is more interesting are the comments from News Corp’s digital head, Jonathan Miller: “None of the traditional media conglomerates are also significant video game players, so to speak, and I think that that’s the missing piece of the equation, particularly when you see how much time is spent playing games online. You must focus, and in our case we are focusing on music, games, video, things like that.”

Does this mean we can expect to see Fox entering the gaming world? Warner Brothers are already getting involved and the logical step forward for News Corp would be to use Fox as a way to step into the games industry proper.
